The tests of General Education Development (GED) are designed to measure the major and lasting academic outcomes students normally acquire by completing a typical high school program of study. The GED measures academic skills in five areas: writing, social studies, science, reading, and mathematics.

Who can participate in the the GED prep program at BSO?

The GED prep program is open to any student who
- has withdrawn from public school, or plans to do so before enrolling in the program.
- will be at least 17 years old by February 1.
- is a Colorado resident with a Colorado mailing address.
- is currently enrolled in a public school but may not be able to meet graduation requirements for the diploma program.
- is ready to move on to college or the job market right away

How much does it cost?

For students under 21, the entire program, including all materials, comes at no cost. Branson also covers testing and retesting fees for these students. Adults and students over 21 will be assessed a $325 fee for the program.

How do I sign up?

Click here and fill out an application. A Branson GED teacher will contact you for an interview, which will be conducted over the phone. If you are accepted into the program, we will send you a GED prep packet and you may begin working to prepare for the test online. You have 4 ½ months to complete the program. When you are ready to test, your Branson GED teacher will help you set up a time and place to do so.

To pass the five-test battery, the GED candidate must demonstrate a level of skill that meets or surpasses that of approximately 60 percent of graduating high school seniors.

I want to go to college. Will having a GED instead of diploma affect my chances for acceptance?

No. Some college programs may require additional credits, but nationwide, 93% of colleges and universities accept the GED graduates who meet their other requirements (e.g. SAT or ACT score requirements). About 1 in 20 first year college students is a GED graduate. GED graduates are successful doctors, public servants, office workers, mechanics, technicians, college professors, military leaders, business people, writers, and artists.

How will having a GED rather than a diploma affect the way a potential employer looks at my application?

The credentials issued on the basis of GED test scores are generally considered to satisfy high school graduation requirements for purposes of employment, promotion and licensing. According to the GED Testing Service, “More than 95 percent of U.S. employers consider GED graduates the same as traditional high school graduates in regard to hiring, salary, and opportunity for advancement.”

Will people look down on me if I have my GED instead of a diploma?

Given the information presented here, they shouldn’t. The GED is widely accepted as a basis for awarding high school equivalency credentials, and it has become the route of many students who, for a variety of reasons, feel they cannot complete the four years of study and the specific credit requirements necessary for a high school diploma. What are the GED tests like?

Except for the essay, all tests are multiple choice. There are five tests: writing (proofreading skills and essay-writing); reading (interpretation of literary and the arts); social studies (concepts in US and world history, civics and government, economics, and geography); science (concepts in life science, earth and space science, and physical science); math (basic number operations through algebra).

What score do I need to pass the GED tests?

To pass the 2002 Series GED Tests, test-takers must earn both a minimum score of 410 on each test and an average score of at least 450 for all the tests in the battery. This means a minimum total score of 2,250 with no single test score below 410.

If I don’t pass the GED tests, can I try again?

Yes. You may take each test up to 3 times. If you do not pass it on the third try, you must wait 6 months to try again, and at that point, you will have to pay the full test fee again. Since there are only three forms of each test available in the state each year, a candidate may test only three times in any calendar year.

Do I have to take all of the tests on the same day?

No. In fact, we do not recommend that you take all 5 tests on the same day, as the entire battery of tests takes about 7 hours of testing time. You can divide up the tests in any way you like.
